RAD-GEN.001 is a hundred oil paintings after Camille Pissarro. The composition is generated. The painting is not. The edition rides on one question: now that a machine can fake the feeling of a sunset, what is the hand still for?
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, July 31, 2026, ZEX PR WIRE — The Church of Conceptual Art has released RAD-GEN.001, a hundred small oil paintings that pit the newest way of making an image against one of the oldest.
Each painting begins as a study generated by a model trained on the late landscapes of Camille Pissarro, the Impressionist. It is then painted in oil, on a twelve-inch canvas, by Kim Van Do, who has painted landscapes from life for fifty years.
The split is the whole point. The machine does the seeing. The man does the painting. The edition asks which part of a picture a machine can actually reach.
Pissarro never painted the sunset in front of him. He painted what it did to his eye on the way in. Impressionism was always a copy of a sensation, not a copy of the world. RAD-GEN.001 adds only the step the present makes cheap: a model produces the study, and a living painter drags it back into oil.
“A machine can now fake the look of a feeling,” said Paul-Alexander Pissarro, co-founder of the Church of Conceptual Art and great-great-grandson of Camille Pissarro. “What it can’t do is hold a brush for fifty years. This is a hundred tries at finding the line between the two.”
Van Do studied under Neil Welliver and Rackstraw Downes. He is also the father of Jesse Do, who co-founded the Church of Conceptual Art with Pissarro. The edition runs on two family lines at once: one reaching back five generations to Pissarro, one running across a workshop from father to son. The hand on every canvas was trained the old way, over decades, and this edition puts it at the center instead of hiding it.
Every painting carries a contract that travels with the object: at every future resale, half the price returns to the artists. It is the reason the Church of Conceptual Art calls itself an institution and not a brand. The people who make the work keep a stake in it after it leaves the room.
